Choose colours carefully

One downside to painting your fence slate blue is that bird crap is now much more visible. ^^;;;

C++: Lack of constructor chaining = suck

One of the things I dislike the most about C and C++ is the amount of code you have to write to get something done (you can tell i'm a C# fan). C++ doesn't have constructor chaining! This is crappy because I have to write an extra file scoped function or a private method.

For the latter, that means I have to have extra entries in the header file and I have to call the method from all constructors. I don't really like that. More unnecessary code = more chance something will go wrong.

Block current thread waiting for async OutputDataReceived to complete

Ran into a problem at work in the following scenario:
My app is a frontend for some cygwin applications. It starts the cygwin apps, monitors their standard output and standard error and reports progress and feeds back information to the user based on what they write out.

Technical stuffCollapse )

D-pad lock

Went to Bunnings yesterday in search of a combination lock and found this cool one from Master. It has a D-pad style input so instead of spinning right, then left, then right you key in a series of up / down / left / right slides. Pretty nifty! It'll be good for us that grew up with gamepads ^^

I wonder how many gamers will set combinations based on old game cheat codes.. (30 life cheat code for contra on nes anyone? ^^;)

Drill happy

The previous owner of our house was quite drill happy: there's lots of holes made in the walls for hanging pictures and other things. They were a bit noobish though and didn't use wallplugs or anything... just screws and nails into brick (or if they were lucky, mortar).

On the bright side, the screws are easy to remove and my plaster patching skills are getting better ^^;

When writing instructions, at least check that they make sense..

I bought a solar powered sensor light today from Bunnings, and the instructions contain the following phrase:

"To charge batteries, expose the solar panel to direct sunlight for 36-48 hours."

Unfortunately the light didn't contain a ticket to Norway or Antarctica so it might be a bit difficult to carry out these instructions. Does this void my warranty?

Taiwan Trip

Last week I went to Taiwan for a friend's wedding. Taiwan was interesting, and notably Taxis there are completely crazy. I thought taxis in Singapore and Malaysia were pretty bad but they don't really compare. Traffic lights are optional, when they're not just blinking amber and when walking on the sidewalk you have to be careful that a scooter doesn't run you over.

Notably though, Taiwan has less engrish than Japan. ^^

I've started to go through my photos, but i've started off with the food pictures which are here. Food in Taiwan is really cheap! More to come later.

A friendly reminder if you're in WA

Check if your PC's clock is set an hour later due to the lack of daylight savings in the state.
